Intel 5 Series architecture

Platform Controller Hub is a family of chips introduced by Intel in 2008 with Nehalem . Since the functions of the north bridge have moved to the processor , PCH acts as the south bridge .

Before that, Intel Hub Architecture ( MCH (GMCH) + ICH ) was used, starting with the i810 and ending with the P45 / X48 .

PCH controls certain data channels and auxiliary functions used in conjunction with Intel processors. These include synchronization (system clock), Flexible Display Interface (FDI) and Direct Media Interface (DMI), although FDI is only used with a CPU that has an integrated graphics processor.

In the new architecture, the functions are redistributed between the central hub and the central processor: some functions of the north bridge, memory controller and PCI-E lines were integrated into the CPU, while PCH took over the remaining functions of the north and south bridges.
