The city is located about 8 km south of Roermond . Received the status of the city in 1271, its main attraction is the ruins of the castle of the same name, built in the XIII century .
Montfort has a population of around 5,000.
Until 1991, Montfort was a separate municipality. Later it became part of another municipality - Posterholt, which was later renamed Ambt Montfort. [one]
Since January 1, 2007 Montfort is part of the municipality of Rourdalen.
Attractions
- Montfort Castle Ruins; the castle itself was built around 1260 . For centuries, it was the government center of Ambt Montfort.
- Mass graves and monuments in the cemetery. The victims of the Montfort bombing at the end of World War II are buried here.
- The historical center of the city. Most of the buildings in this part of the city were only built in the late 1950s , as most of the buildings were destroyed during World War II .
