Biography
He began his career in 1928. From 1936 to 1941 he studied at the Tbilisi Institute of Railway Transport. Lenin (now the Georgian Technical University ). During World War II volunteered for the front. After demobilization, he worked in the Glavmostrostroy of the city of Moscow , where he formed the Bridge Train. Under his leadership, a number of railway bridges in the Crimea , from Dzhankoy to Sevastopol and Kerch, were restored. On the instructions of the Government of the USSR he took part in the development of virgin and fallow lands of Northern Kazakhstan .
In 1950, Bridge Train N 444, which was headed by Lev Kareli, was relocated to the city of Nikolaev , where unique bridges were built under his leadership:
- the strategic Trikhatsky railway bridge across the Southern Bug River (construction started in 1950, commissioned in 1954) [1] ;
- Varvarovsky Bridge is a movable automobile bridge across the Southern Bug River in Nikolaev (construction started in 1957, commissioned in 1964). As of 1964, it was the largest highway bridge in the USSR;
- Ingulsky Bridge is a movable automobile bridge across the Ingul River in Nikolaev (construction started in 1974, commissioned in 1980). Until 1996, the Ingul bridge was the bridge with the largest drawbridge in Europe, now it is less than 6 meters lower than the bridge in Rotterdam [2] .
In general, Lev Kareli built about 40 bridges of various classes. During the construction of the Varvarovsky Bridge, for which Kareli received the Lenin Prize, many radically new technologies were put into practice, according to which they later built the largest bridge in Europe at that time across the Volga in Saratov ( Saratov Bridge ) and the Metro Bridge in Kiev [3] . With his direct participation, the bridge builders abandoned the deadly method of building bridge pillars - using caisson chambers and switched to a more advanced and safer for people - camouflage (using a directional explosion) method [4] . Construction of the Varvarovsky Bridge across the Southern Bug River was included in the list of objects of indicative construction of the USSR Ministry of Transport and Construction.
