He studied at the Central School of the Four Nations and in 1778 became a student of Gabriel Doyen .

In 1793, Lenoir became a participant in the exhumation of royal graves in Saint-Denis and, opposing revolutionary vandalism in relation to works of art, was able to save part of the royal relics. On the initiative of Bailly , at the beginning of the French Revolution, the Constituent Assembly decided to concentrate the confiscated objects of art of national property in one place and Lenoir, performing this task, collected various objects in the Augustinian monastery, where the National Higher School of Fine Arts was later opened; in 1795, Lenoir was appointed director of the museum of French monuments created on the basis of this collection.

The museum lasted 20 years and was closed by order of the king in 1816, and the monuments collected in it were transferred to national museums, some were returned to the monasteries from where they were taken. Lenoir was appointed head of antiquities in the royal basilica of Saint-Denis and engaged in the restoration of royal graves.

Father of the architect A. Lenoir (1801-1894). His grandson is the sculptor Alfred Lenoir .

He was buried in the Montparnasse cemetery (plot 2).
