Rengarten, Vladimir Pavlovich

Vladimir Pavlovich Rengarten ( July 12 (24), 1882 , Tashkent - July 10, 1964 , Leningrad ) - Soviet geologist and paleontologist, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1946). Laureate of the Stalin Prize of the second degree (1948).

Biography

Born in Tashkent in the family of a mining engineer.

He graduated from the classical gymnasium in Yekaterinoslavl with a gold medal (1901) and the Petersburg Mining Institute (1908).

Since his student years he worked in the Geological Committee. Senior geologist of the Geological Committee (1918-1931), Institute of the Geological Map (1932-1934), Central Research Geological Exploration Institute (TsNIGRI) (1934-1948; 1963-1964). Senior researcher at the All-Union Geological Institute (VSEGEI) (1939-1942), the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1942-1949), the Laboratory of Coal Geology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1950-1955), and the Laboratory of Aeromethods of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1955-1964).

Director of the Central Research Geological Museum. F.N. Chernysheva (1947-1949) [2] .

The author of works on regional geology, mainly tectonics, stratigraphy, and paleontology of the Caucasus. He conducted a tectonic zoning of the Caucasus, comparing it with the Pamirs. He developed stratigraphic schemes of the Cretaceous deposits of the Caucasus.

Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences (1935), Professor (1938). Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1946) [3] .

Scientific and practical activities

In 1912, he opened the Ushkor anticline, extending in a sub-latitudinal direction between the rivers Fortanga and Kambileevskaya. [4] In 1915-1916, on the instructions of the Geological Committee, he organized exploration and production of scarce fluorspar on the Boguchan hill. [5] In 1926, he proposed the first tectonic zoning scheme of the Caucasus. [6]

In 1951 he published a biostratigraphic diagram of the Lower Cretaceous of the Caucasus, which for a long time was used as a reference. [6]

Works

Rengarten's works are devoted to the regional geology of many regions of the Caucasus, the eastern slope of the Urals, the Pamirs and the Amur Region. [7]

Rewards

  • 1946 - Medal "For Valiant Labor in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945."
  • 1948 - Stalin Prize of the 2nd degree - for the monograph "Northern Caucasus" [8] .
