History
During World War II, the United States fought with Japan in the Pacific , including battles over the Solomon Islands. In recognition of the close ties between the United States and the Solomon Islands in World War II, the US Congress funded the construction of this stateβs parliament building. In 1978, Great Britain recognized the independence of the Solomon Islands and the United States established diplomatic contact with this country. The US ambassador to Papua New Guinea also represents the country's interests in the Solomon Islands. In 2013, the United States allocated $ 50,000 to help deal with the effects of the dengue outbreak , and in 2014, $ 250,000 was provided to help the Solomon Islands deal with the effects of the floods.
Bilateral Economic Relations
Solomon Islands provides access to US fishing vessels in its territorial waters in exchange for monetary compensation. Under a separate economic assistance agreement, the United States government provides US $ 21 million per year to countries in the region.
