Biography
Born in 1941 in Washington (according to other sources in Arlington ). He comes from a Jewish family. At the age of 12, on the recommendation of a doctor (Jim Bregman suffered from chronic bronchitis), he began judo classes and became so interested in this sport that after graduating from high school ( Wakefield High School in Arlington), in 1960 he went to college in Japan. He studied at the Department of Economics at Sophia University in Tokyo , and continued training, first at Kodokan , and then at Waseda and Meiji Universities.
According to the recollections of a roommate: “Jim Bregman has always been a strong contender with a tremendous thirst for success ... Nothing could stop him: neither the lack of money, nor prejudice towards foreigners, nor even his spinal injury, which often made itself felt severe pain.” [ 2]
In 1964 he returned to the United States, where he won the national title.
He played at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo , fought in the category of up to 80 kilograms. In his category 25 athletes fought. Competitions were held according to the circular system in groups and then according to the Olympic system. Wrestlers were divided into eight groups of three people each (one in four). The winner of the group reached the quarter finals, after which the competition was eliminated after the loss.
Bregman lost in the semifinals to Wolfgang Hofmann by a painful trick and became the bronze medalist of the games.
In 1965 he became the winner of the Pan American Judo Championship (where he was recognized as the best judo player of the tournament [3] ) and became the bronze medalist of the World Championship. He also won the 1965 Maccabiad Gold Medal.
In 1966, he seriously injured his knee and left his career. At the end of his sports career, he began working in the US Navy as a financial manager, and at the same time began to get an MBA at American University. Later he became a sports functionary, in 1969 he became a member of the Board of Directors of the USA Judo Association, in 1972 he became its president and until recently was one of them, having done a lot for the development of judo in the USA.
Lives in Washington with his wife. [2]
