Biography
Born in 1941 (according to other sources 1943 [1] ) in Cologne . July 6, 1954 came to the Achilles Judo Club in Cologne. Already in 1955, he won the German youth championship, and then until 1959 he still won this title four times in a row.
He played at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo with virtually no experience in international tournaments. He fought in the category of up to 80 kilograms. In his category 25 athletes fought. Competitions were held according to the circular system in groups and then according to the Olympic system. Wrestlers were divided into eight groups of three people each (one in four). The winner of the group reached the quarter finals, after which the competition was eliminated after the defeat.
Hofmann was able to reach the finals, where, losing by holding Isao Okano , he won the silver medal of the Olympic Games. The moment of the meeting between Hofmann and Okano is imprinted on the postage stamps of the emirate of Ajman in 1964 and 1972 (and in 1972, the stamp dedicated to the victory of Shinob Sekina is illustrated with the same picture from the photograph)
He ended his career in sports in 1973.
