Judo competitions in the framework of the 1964 Olympic Games in middle weight (up to 80 kilograms) were held in Tokyo on October 21, 1964 at the Nippon Budokan .

Tournament participants in the number of 25 people were divided into seven groups of three athletes in a group and in one group there were four people. In each group in a round robin tournament the winner was determined. The winners then entered the tournament with a knockout after one defeat. The remaining two wrestlers met in the final; the losers in the semifinals received bronze medals.

The favorite was naturally the Japanese wrestler Isao Okano , undefeated for several years. He could compete with the 1962 European champion Lionel Grosse. In the quarterfinals, Okano defeated Grosse with a choke technique, while the judges did not even notice, and Okano had to attract their attention. In the final, Okano quickly defeated the German Wolfgang Hofmann . Bronze medals went to Jim Bregman and Kim Ui Tae .

Tournament

The rules of grades in the early Olympic judo were different from those accepted in modern times. The winning technique was indicated in the report only in the case when the technical action led to a clear victory (ippon) , respectively, the data are also given in the table (with a capital letter). In the event that a clear victory was not achieved, the victory was given without indicating a technique: Kinsa corresponds to the Coca score (now also non-existent, 3 points), waza-ari nor tikai waza corresponds to the Yuko score (5 points), waza-ari (half- victory, 7 points), and avasevadza , which corresponds to the current waza-ari avasete ippon (two half-victories are equal to net). Also, a specific technique was not indicated in case of victory by a counter-technique (for example, such as Uti Mata Sukashi ); in this case, it was indicated that the victory was achieved by a countermeasure in general: Kaesi Wadza .

For the names of technical actions, see Judo Technique .

Applied and other grounds for victory, preserved even now, for example, fusen gati - non-appearance of the opponent.
