Alexander Vasilievich Popov (May 3, 1903, Znamenskoye village (Bolshoi Burtas), Penza province - March 20, 1962) - Ukrainian scientist-breeder in the field of breeding new beet varieties, Lenin Prize winner (1960).

Biography
Born in the village of Znamenskoye (Big Burtas), Kerensky district, Penza province ; besides him, the parents had ten more children.
In 1921 he graduated from the Unified Labor School in Kerensk . After that, he went to Penza with the intention of enrolling in a gardening school. However, the same year he passed the documents to the Voronezh Agricultural Institute . He graduated in 1926, began his career at the Ramon Experimental Selection Station under the direction of academicians A. L. Mazlumov and I. V. Yakushkin . He worked at the Ramonsky breeding station until 1940, when he passed as a senior specialist on sugar beet breeding at the Uladovsky breeding station.
In early July 1941, with his family and employees, he was evacuated to the Kyrgyz SSR - to the Novotroitsk sugar factory of the Frunzensky district.
Since January 1945, he has been working at the Yaltushkovsky breeding station ( Vinnytsia region ) as the head of the department of sugar beet breeding.
One of the team of breeders who for the first time in the world created a monoecious form of sugar beet and brought it to production use.
In 1955, the team launched a new variety of sugar beet seeds - Yaltushkovsky odnorostkovy 2; put into practice in 1958.
The hybrid was created by crossing 83% of Yaltushkovsky single-seeded and 17% of multi-seeded variety Ramon 06, zoned in 1960. His co-authors: A. V. Popov, A. K. Kolomiets, I. F. Buzanov , V. P. Zosimovich, M. G. Bordonos, and G. S. Mokan.
In general, brought 8 varieties of sugar beet.
