Alexey Sidorovich Kolomiychenko ( March 18 (30), 1898 ( 18980330 ) , Shpola - September 17, 1974 , Kiev ) - Ukrainian Soviet otolaryngologist, doctor of medical sciences , professor , corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (since December 20, 1967 ) [1] , organizer and first director of the Institute of Otolaryngology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine. Brother - surgeon Mikhail Kolomiychenko.

Biography

Born on March 18 ( 30 March ), 1898 in the town of Shpola, Cherkasy Oblast, in a large, prosperous peasant family. In 1919 - 1924 he studied at the medical faculty of Kiev University . Simultaneously with his studies, he worked as a medical assistant on the South-Western Railway .

From 1924 he worked as an intern at the Izyaslav district hospital in Shepetovsky district . Since 1928 - at the Kiev Institute of Advanced Medical . He worked as a junior assistant , senior assistant professor , and since 1936 - associate professor of the clinic.

In 1936 he was appointed head of a large children's otolaryngology department, which he organized for the first time in Ukraine in the NI Kalinin regional hospital. On this basis, his independent pedagogical activity began with a lecture given to otorhinolaryngological diseases of children’s age by the cadets of the Kiev Institute for the Advanced Training of Doctors. The clinic became the center of development of a new direction of otorhinolaryngology at that time - pediatric surgery of the ear, nose and throat.

In 1937 - 1940 , he worked out in detail the topical issues of treatment of infants with ear diseases during toxic dyspepsia. With this pathology at that time there was a high mortality rate. A. S. Kolomiychenko proposed and introduced into practice anthro and tympanopuncture, which proved to be very effective, contributed to the reduction of mortality. For the first time in Kiev and in Ukraine, he applied the removal of foreign bodies from the larynx , trachea and bronchi without a tracheotomy and widely introduced the method of direct laryngoscopy in children into practice. He also used new drugs at the time, sulfidine and sulfazole, in the treatment of children with oantrites. At the same time he was a consultant to the Institute for the Protection of Motherhood and Childhood.

December 17, 1940 successfully defended his thesis , approved in the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences on May 17, 1941 .

During the Great Patriotic War, was in occupied Kiev. He worked in several otorhinolaryngological institutions, mainly in the territory of the hospital named after NI Kalinin. He took an active part in assisting the partisans and members of the Kiev underground organization. Saved the young men and women from being hijacked to Germany, put them in the clinic under the guise of seriously ill patients, gave out false certificates.

Since 1943 he headed the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Faculty of Dentistry, Kiev Medical Institute . In 1944 - 1966 - Head of the Department of Otolaryngology of the Institute for Advanced Medical Studies, in 1952 - 1960. - Head of the 4th Department of the Hospital of the Ministry of Health of the Ukrainian SSR. In 1960, he organized the Kiev Research Institute of Otolaryngology: in 1960–1974 , he was its first director, since 1974, a scientific consultant.

From 1919 he lived in Kiev on Reitarskaya Street , 17. Died on September 17, 1974 . He was buried in Kiev at Baikovo Cemetery (station number 1).

Scientific and social activities

He made a significant contribution to the development of tonsillary problems, diagnosis and treatment of reduced hearing, middle ear inflammation, intracranial complications, conservative treatment of the main diseases of the ear, throat, nose, treatment of traumatic injuries, scleroma of the upper respiratory tract, occupational hearing pathology. Improved the old ways of conducting operations, developed new ones. Created a scientific school of otolaryngology in Ukraine.

Since 1958, he was the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Ear, Nasal and Throat Diseases, since 1964 - Chairman of the Board of the Ukrainian Society of Otolaryngology.

Awards

Honored Scientist of the Ukrainian SSR (since 1955 ); Winner of the Lenin Prize ( 1964 ; for the development and introduction into practice of rumor-healing operations in otosclerosis [2] ).

Memory

In June 1978, the Kiev Institute of Otolaryngology was named after Alexey Kolomyiychenko [3] . The institute has a museum named after Alexei Kolomiychenko. A bronze memorial plaque with a bas-relief of a scientist ( sculptor N. K. Vronsky , architect V. G. Gnezdilov ) was installed near the entrance to the institute at Zoological, 3 May 8, 1978 . In Shpol, the district hospital bears the name of Kolomiychenko brothers, and there is a museum with it.

In Kiev, on a house on Reitarskaya Street, 17, where Aleksey Kolomyiychenko lived in 1919–1974 , a granite plaque was installed on April 24, 2003 (sculptor N. M. Sribnyuk).
