Known for his opposition to Jean-Jacques Rousseau in a dispute about French music, he expressed his position in pamphlets “A Letter from a Visigoth to Mr. Freron on a Dispute on Harmony with Mr. Rousseau” ( fr. “Lettre d'un Visigoth à M. Fréron, sur la dispute harmonique avec M. Rousseau ” ; Paris , 1754 ) and“ A New Letter to Mr. Rousseau from Geneva ”( French “ Nouvelle Lettre à M. Rousseau de Genève ” ; Paris , 1754 ).
He spoke from a radical Catholic position in the pamphlet Praise Louis XIV and his Council for the restoration of the Nantes Edict ( French Apologie de Louis XIV et de son Conseil sur la révocation de l'édit de Nantes ; Paris, 1758 ), which justified the massacre Protestants on Bartholomew’s night and caused a sharp response from Voltaire .
