In 1859, the construction of an artificial harbor and port began in Petrovsk under the direction of the captain and military engineer Adolf Danilovich Falkenhagen . Officially the port was opened on November 17, 1870 [1] .
Description
Makhachkala port is located on the trade route Europe-Caucasus-Asia (TRACECA). Able to take ships throughout the year. There is a dry cargo harbor, which includes a railway ferry and auto ferry terminal.
The port’s ferry is designed for ferries of the type Makhachkala-1 , Petrovsk and Sovetsky Dagestan . The port's oil and gas industry is equipped with tanker handling facilities with a payload capacity of up to 10,000 tons and a draft of up to 10 meters. On the territory adjacent to the port, there is a tank farm, which is connected to the main oil pipeline Baku-Novorossiysk .
Together with the Iranian side, the project “Floating Pipeline” is being developed: large-tonnage vessels will transport oil to the Iranian port of Neka through the port of Makhachkala.
It is planned to include the port in the structure of the international transport corridor "North - South" .
The first phase of the railway ferry with a capacity of 20,440 wagons per year was built, which provides a direct railway connection with the ports of Kazakhstan ( Aktau port ) and Turkmenistan ( Turkmenbashi port ) and, in the future, Iran ( Amirabad port ).
The operational management of the port of Makhachkala today includes 18 transport vessels, with a total deadweight of 90.5 thousand tons, including ferries of the type Makhachkala-1, built at the Ulyanik shipyard ( Croatia ) with a capacity of 52 rail cars each.
Within the framework of the North-South international transport corridor , the Ministry of Transport of Russia plans to increase the port’s carrying capacity to 15 million tons per year, including for oil cargo to 10 million tons per year.
