The early years

A Belgian by birth, was baptized as Philip Louis Brion. The son of a merchant Pierre Louis Brion and Marie Detrox. His parents arrived in Curacao in 1777 . In 1794, they sent their son to study in the Netherlands . While there, Brion entered the service of the troops of the Batavian Republic to combat the invasion of the British in the north of the Netherlands. He participated in the battle of Bergen (September 19, 1799) and in the battle of Castricum (October 16, 1799). He was captured in English, but was released after the conclusion of the Alkmaar Convention on the exchange of prisoners.

On his return to Curacao, he took an active part in the revolutionary movement on the island in September 1800 . Soon after his return, the island was occupied by the British. Brion fled from the British authorities to the United States, where he studied marine science and commerce.

Brion returned to his native island in 1803 and went into business. From 1803 to 1806, he conducted various operations to prevent the British capture of the island. However, the British again occupied the island in 1807 , and Brion went into exile on the Danish island of St. Thomas , where he again engaged in commerce.

Venezuelan War of Independence

In 1813, Brion joined the Venezuelan independence movement, and a year later Simon Bolivar made him captain of the frigate . In 1815, he went to England, where he acquired a 24-gun Dardo corvette, with which he intended to help the Cartagena rebels. He returned with Bolivar to Haiti . Soon Brion was promoted to captain and assembled a squadron for expeditions to the shores of Venezuela. On May 2, 1816, he won his first victory over the Spanish fleet at the Battle of Los Frailes. On the day of victory, he was proclaimed admiral at the initiative of Bolivar. After the rebels gained control of the island of Margarita , the campaign was extended to Guyana (Venezuela).

On August 3, 1817, Brion sailed up the Orinoco River with a squadron and captured 14 of the 28 Spanish ships and 1,500 prisoners at the Battle of Cabriana. He freed Guyana on November 5, 1817, and was appointed president to the Council of Government.

In 1819, he again arrived at Margarita, where he organized an expedition of 22 ships to attack the coast of New Granada, together with the ground forces of Colonel Mariano Montilla . They captured the ports and mouth of the Magdalena River, as well as the cities of Barranquilla and Santa Marta . However, due to the conflict with Montilla, Brion withdrew his fleet to Lake Maracaibo in May 1821 .

Death

Brion suffered from tuberculosis and, due to the aggravation of the disease, decided to return to his native island. He died there in 1821, the day after his arrival. Brion was buried in the family estate. Later, his remains were reburied in the National Pantheon of Venezuela (April 10, 1882).
