Biography
Isaac Marcus Jost was born on February 22, 1793 in Bernburg. He studied at the universities of Gottingen and Berlin . He taught first in Berlin, then, since 1835 - at the Jewish Commercial School in Frankfurt. As a philologist, Jost was interested in English and German studies: he owned textbooks of English ( German by Lehrbuch der Englischen Sprache , 1826) and German style ( German by Theoretisch-Praktisches Handbuch zum Unterricht im Deutschen Stil , 1835), a dictionary of plays by William and Shakespeare .
However, Jost gained predominant fame and recognition through his writings on the history of the Jewish people: “The History of Jews from the Maccabees to the Present Day” ( German: Geschichte der Israeliten Seit der Zeit der Makkabäer bis auf Unsere Tage , 1820 - 1829 , in 9 volumes ), "The Recent History of the Jews in 1815-1845" ( German: Neuere Geschichte den Israeliten von 1815-1845 , 1846 - 1847 ) and "The History of Judaism and its sects" ( German: Geschichte des Judenthums und seiner Sekten , 1857 - 1859) ) Jost also owns the edition of the Mishnah ( 1832 - 1834 ) with a partial translation into German and original comments.
Jost actively acted as a journalist on Jewish issues, defending Judaism from Christian authors who were negative towards him. He was also co-editor of the historical journal Annals of Israel ( German: Israelitische Annalen , 1839 - 1841 ) and the journal Zion ( 1841 - 1842 ).
