Biography

Alexander Latsinsky was born in July 1850 in Tiflis. Orthodox religion. In 1860 he entered the 3rd St. Petersburg gymnasium . After he studied at the Yaroslavl gymnasium and further at the Lyceum, living all this time (about 9 years) in the Transfiguration Monastery in Yaroslavl with his uncle, Archbishop Nile . During his studies at the Lyceum, and also after graduation, he studied, in the words of M. I. Semevsky , “con amore ” , the study of foreign languages, in particular English, Italian, Spanish, Swedish and Dutch [1] .

In 1870, Latsinsky moved to St. Petersburg, where he entered the civil service at the Ministry of War at the General Staff . On November 7, 1871, he was promoted to college adviser , and on September 1, 1874, he was appointed assistant director of the library of the General Staff [2] . In 1879-1880, he corrected and prepared for publication the "Systematic Catalog of the General Staff Library". In 1883, he compiled the first chronological code of Russian military history "Chronology of Russian military history ... from Peter I to modern times." This manuscript was approved by the Military Scientific Committee , but in the form of a book was published only in 1891 . In 1901, it was published, also compiled by Latsinsky, - "The Chronology of World Military History ... 4400 BC. - 1900 according to R. XP " [1] .

Latsinsky was also the chief corrector and the closest assistant to the editor of the monthly historical publication " Russian Antiquity " - M. I. Semevsky . In 1886-1888 he himself served as editor of Russian Antiquity, and from April to September 1892 he was temporarily its editor. At the same time, Latsinsky collaborated with the editions Russian Disabled , Military Collection , and also participated in the compilation of the Encyclopedia of Military and Naval Sciences by G. A. Leer [3] .

On November 7, 1900, Latsinsky assumed the post of head of the military-historical branch of the Main Directorate of the General Staff [4] [5] . For quite a long time he lived there on Officer Street , 13 (library of the General Staff) [6] . He rose to the status of State Councilor [7] . As of 1916 he was a full member of the St. Petersburg Archaeological Institute [8] . Under 1923 it is referred to as a librarian [9] .
