SLAM (portable mine)

Content

For this term there is an abbreviation "SLAM", which has other meanings: see SLAM .

SLAM ( Eng. S electable L ightweight A ttack M unition ) is an American multipurpose small-sized mine adopted by the special operations forces of the US Armed Forces [1] [2] . The main purpose of a mine is to destroy lightly armored vehicles, airplanes on airfields, ammunition depots, etc. [3] The rather high destructive ability of mines with minor weight and size parameters makes it a very convenient means of organizing road ambushes and sabotage. It also notes the convenience of its use to capture prisoners in situations where the use of more powerful anti-tank mines can not only hit the vehicle, but also destroy what the reconnaissance group needs in it [1] .

The creation of the mine was carried out by the American company Alliant Tech Systems , the start of development occurred in March 1990 [3] . According to data for 2011, Alliant Tech Systems continues to offer a mine to potential buyers [4] . In 2011, there were reports that Alliant Techsystems was awarded a contract to upgrade the existing M4 SLAM mines to the M4A1 level and to produce the M320A1 training kits for the SLAM mines. The total amount of the transaction was 45.7 million dollars [5] .

The principle of operation and device

Destruction of a target in a mine explosion is carried out with the help of a shock core .

The mine is equipped with a universal fuse with a magnetic sensor, a passive infrared sensor and an electronic timer that initiates a blasting after 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes. In addition, it is possible to use in a controlled version using electric detonators M6 . The mine is equipped with a safety device that interacts with the cocking lever on the front of the hull.

Available in the following major modifications:

  • M2 ( for special operations forces ) with self-neutralization device, marked in green with black warhead.
  • M3 ( for special operations forces ) managed option.
  • M4 and M4E1 ( for the army ) with self-destructing device, marked green with green warhead [1] [4] .

Performance characteristics

Mine weight - 1 kg.
Overall dimensions 5.2 × 3.5 × 2.2 inches
The working distance of the infrared sensor is up to 7.5 m.
The range of distances at which the shock core retains the striking effect is 0.12-7.5 m.
The time interval for self-neutralization or self-destruction is 4, 10 or 24 hours.
Water resistance up to a depth of 2 meters [3] .
