Lange, Anthony (artist)

German by origin. Born into the family of actor of the Vienna Court Theater. He studied painting with Lorenz Adolf Schonberger (1768-1826).

For almost 20 years he worked as a set designer at the Jan Nepomuk Kaminsky Theater.

In 1810 he moved and settled in Lviv. For many years he worked as an artist at the Lviv theater, enjoyed the respect and recognition of the local public, and became a prominent figure in the local cultural environment.

A. Lange chose picturesque corners of Galicia for most of his paintings: the ruins of the castle in Zbarazh , the castle in Koltov , the views of Olesko , Plisneska , the castle in Terebovlya , and romantic alpine landscapes.

The paintings, watercolors and drawings of the artist served as the basis for the release in Lviv of his first lithograph albums: “Zbior widoków cenniejszych ogrodów w Polsce” and “Zbior najpiękniejszych okolic w Galicji”, published in 1824 by Peter Piller's printing house (35 engravings). Fourteen of his paintings adorned the state halls of the Lviv City Hall . In addition, he was assigned to design the city during celebrations (the arrival of crowned heads, fireworks, etc.).

He painted landscapes in oil, gouache and watercolor.

His paintings are in many museums in Poland: in the National museums in Krakow , Wroclaw , Szczecin , Lviv Art Gallery , Lviv Historical Museum , Melchinsky Library in Poznan, museum collections in Ukraine, Russia and private collections.
