Charmanka (from French Charmante Catherine - “Beautiful Catherine”, the name of one of the first songs played on the barrel organ, also “Street Organ” , street organ ) - a mechanical device for playing musical works. Invented by the Italian Barbieri. In Russia, it was sometimes called "Katarinka." It was originally used to train songbirds and was called Chizhovka or Blackbird. It is a small organ without a keyboard - a box, inside of which sounding tubes, furs and a wooden or metal roller with spiked fists are placed in several rows. Turning the knob, the organ-grinder could play 6-8 melodies recorded on the roller.
Such "cam devices" have been known since antiquity: small protrusions - "cams" are mounted on rotating cylinders or discs, alternately including the sound of a particular note.
In Holland of the 15th century, such tools were a complex stationary structure operating with the help of hydraulics, weights or a clockwork mechanism. In the XVIII — XIX centuries. a variety of barrel organs were often used in English churches where hymns and psalms were played. Usually a barrel organ is called a mechanical organ of vagrant musicians, a portable instrument performing 6-8 melodies when the handle is rotated.
