Stalk root

The stalk root ( Latin caulorrhiza ), as well as caudex ( caudex ), is the formation on the border of the stem and root parts of the plant, which is the lignified lower sections of perennial shoots with renewal buds, connected to the lignified hypocotyl, often sprouted and thickened by a root , from which Renewal buds are usually located at the level of the soil, less often - above or below it.

The stalk root in some plants can reach impressive sizes - for example, in species of the Prangos genus, it can grow up to 15 kg. Most characteristic for shrubs, in particular, common in deserts, semi-deserts and mountain landscapes. It is found in plants of the Pink family from the genera Lapchatka , Sibbaldia , in a number of genera the tribes Astrovye , in many plants from the families Marevy and Pig .

There is no uniformity in the name of this entity in the literature, there are names for the multi-headed root , multi-headed rhizome , cone-shaped rhizome and others that are incorrect, since the “multi-headedness” is formed by the lignified parts of the stems, and the rhizome is devoid of a pivotal root and carries only subordinate ones.
