About the film
The film tells about the fate of those who commanded the troops during the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942, which became the turning point in the Great Patriotic War . For five months the city resisted the fascist offensive. To give Stalingrad to the enemy meant to lose the war, but it seemed almost impossible to keep the city ... True, in the dialogues of the film the word “Stalingrad” is not pronounced, it says: “city”; Only in one of the frames is the trophy map showing Stalingrad (Zarizin). The absence of a claim for complete historical accuracy is also expressed in the fact that all military personnel wear shoulder straps (which were not yet entered during the defense of Stalingrad) and fictitious names.
The film glorifies both the wisdom of the High Command, which concentrates the reserve for a decisive blow, and the courage, courage and determination of the commanders of all the units who received the order: “Protect the city!”.
The original name is "Army General". The film was completed in 1945 and was released on January 29, 1946 . According to Georges Sadoulou, the picture should be considered "the best work done at the end of the war." Noting that the film has relatively few battle scenes, the director will apply a new technique - “describes the battle psychologically; he forces the viewer to follow the thought of military leaders, their discussions, hesitations and decisions ", the French film expert wrote:" Ermler managed to create a picture that faithfully reflected the new, socialist psychology, and to reach a rare depth with means that the theater had not used until now nor fiction " [1] .
