Biography
James was the eldest son of the famous cartoonist John Doyle and was the uncle of the writer Arthur Conan Doyle [2] .
James received a Catholic education, and also studied painting. Among the early works of D. Doyle, the portrait of Dr. Johnson reading the manuscript “Vicar Wakefield”, which was sold for £ 100, was widely known. But even at a relatively young age, D. Doyle left the profession of an artist and engaged in historical research. The famous work of Doyle "The Chronicles of England from 55 BC to 1485" with his own color illustrations. The Chronicles were highly praised in British society, including praise from Prince Consort Albert , and were published in London in 1864. [3]
Doyle's main work was a catalog of the English nobility, which included a description of all the noble families, except for the barons. This catalog initially covered the period from the Norman conquest of 1066 to the revolution of 1688 , but was subsequently continued until 1885. Doyle's catalog contained detailed information about the English noble families, including genealogy, estates, portraits and heraldic symbols. The catalog was published in three volumes of the in-quarto format in 1886, with a circulation of 200 copies. Since D. Doyle during the preparation of this catalog, especially when describing the early periods, was uncritical towards the selection of sources, the publication caused sharp criticism, and therefore the catalog publishers suffered losses. In 1886, D. Doyle wrote an explanatory text for the color cartoons of his brother Richard , entitled "Scenes from English History" [3] .
James Doyle died in London on December 3, 1892 at his residence in Dorset Square, and was buried at Kensal Green Cemetery on December 9 [3] .
He was married to Jane Henrietta Hawkins. [4]
