Baron Hanley is an aristocratic title, created twice in British history ( 1760 - Peer of Great Britain , 1799 - Peer of Ireland ).

History

The Baron title was first created on March 27, 1760 for Sir Robert Hanley (c. 1708-1772). He served as Attorney General of England and Wales (1756-1757), Lord Custodian of the Great Seal (1757-1761), Lord Chancellor (1761 —1766), Lord Chairperson of the Council (1766-1767) and Lord Lieutenant Hampshire (1764-1771). On May 19, 1764, the title of Earl of Northington was also created for him. His son and successor, Robert Hanley, 2nd Earl of Northington, previously sat in the House of Commons of Great Britain from Hampshire (1768-1772). After the death of Robert Hanley, 2nd Earl of Northington (1747-1786), the titles of Earl and Baron were interrupted. Lady Elizabeth Hanley (d. 1821), the youngest daughter of the first Earl, became the wife of the diplomat Morton Eden (1752-1830). He was the British ambassador to Bavaria (1776-1779), Denmark (1779-1782), Saxony (1783-1791), Prussia (1791-1793), Austria (1793-1794, 1794-1799) and Spain (1794-1795) .

On November 9, 1799, for Morton Eden, the title of Baron Hanley from Chardstock in the county of Dorset (Pearst of Ireland ) was revived. His son, Robert Eden, 2nd Baron Hanley (1789-1841), adopted the surname "Hanley" instead of "Eden" and, in particular, published a maternal biography of his grandfather. He sat in the House of Commons from Fowey (1826-1830). His son, Anthony Hanley Hanley, 3rd Baron Hanley (1825–1898), was a liberal member of the House of Commons from Northampton (1859–1874). On June 28, 1885, the title of Baron Northington from Watford in the county of Northampton ( Peerstvo of the United Kingdom ) was revived for him. This title gave him and his descendants an automatic seat in the House of Lords of Great Britain .

His youngest son, Francis Robert Hanley, 6th Baron Hanley (1877-1962), renewed his surname "Eden" in 1925, the same year he became the successor of his half-brother as Baron Hanley and Earl of Northington. As of 2013, his grandson, Oliver Michael Robert Eden, 8th Baron Hanley, 6th Earl of Northington (born 1953 ), who succeeded his father in 1977, was a peer. He is a conservative politician and served in the conservative administrations of Margaret Thatcher , John Major and David Cameron ( conservative chief “whip” and opposition chief “whip” in the House of Lords in 1998–2001 , deputy minister for the environment in 2010–2011, Minister for the Prevention of Crime and Antisocial Behavior in 2011-2012). The current Lord Henley is one of the ninety elected hereditary peers who remained in the House of Lords following the adoption of the 1999 Act of the House of Lords .

Barons Hanley are members of the famous Eden family. 1st Baron Hanley was the fifth son of Sir Robert Eden, 3rd Baronet from West Auckland, and the younger brother of William Eden, 1st Baron Auckland (1745–1814). Their elder brother Sir Robert Eden, 1st Baronet from Maryland (second son of 3rd Baronet West Auckland), was great-great-grandfather of British Prime Minister Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon (1897-1977), and ancestor of the conservative politician John Benedict Eden, Baron Eden of Winton (born 1925). He was a member of the House of Commons from West Bournemouth (1954-1983).
