Biography

Monument to St. Benedict in Nitra

The life of Benedict is known from the Legend of the Deserts Svorada Andre and Benedict, written by the poet and writer Moor, who lived on the territory of modern Slovakia in the XI century.

Benedict first lived in the Zoborsky monastery, and later as a hermit in a cave in Skalka pri Trencin, where in 1034 he died from injuries caused by the attack of robbers. The robbers threw his dead body into the Wag river. The legend says that after his death, a large eagle flew to the bank of the river. Therefore, rafters, who sailed along the Vag river near this place, began to consider Benedict their patron and protector. In 1224, the Nitrian bishop Jacob founded a Benedictine monastery on this site in honor of St. Benedict.

Benedict was canonized in 1083 by Pope Gregory VII thanks to the efforts of the Hungarian King Laszlo I.

The memory of Saints Andrei Sworad and Benedict according to the liturgical calendar of the Roman Catholic Church is celebrated in Slovakia on July 17 .

Temples in honor of Saints Andrei-Sworad and Benedict can be found in Kisutsky Leskovets, Nitra , Raduostka and Skalka na Wag.
