Club career

Manchester City

Adam is a graduate of the Manchester City Football Academy, with whom he signed his first professional contract in 2007. In the 2008/09 season, Clayton began to be attracted to the main team, several times ended up on the bench, but never made his debut as part of the “townspeople”.

On November 2, 2009, the midfielder went on lease to League One club Carlisle United [1] and a few days later made his debut in professional football in a cup match against Morkam (2: 2). On November 10, Adam scored his first goal at the adult level, hitting the Chesterfield goal in the Football League Trophy game . In January 2010, Clayton's lease was extended until the end of the season.

Leeds United

On August 6, 2010, the midfielder, on a monthly rental basis, joined the Leeds United Champions Club [2] . The next day, Clayton made his debut with the Peacocks, appearing as a substitute in the match against Derby County (1: 2). On August 31, 2010, Clayton signed a standing contract with Leeds.

On November 19, 2010, to receive playing practice, the midfielder went on lease to League One club Peterborough United [3] , where he spent 2 months. In January, the footballer returned to Leeds, but on March 24, 2011, he again went on loan to the Milton Keynes Dons club [4] .

The parties were negotiating an extension of the contract, but failed to agree on a salary, and as a result, the new Leeds manager Neil Warnock put the player on transfer.

Huddersfield Town

On July 6, 2012, Clayton signed a 3-year contract with the newcomer to the Championship - Huddersfield Town Club [5] , which was headed by its former coach Simon Grayson . Middlesbrough

On August 13, 2014, Clayton moved to Middlesbrough for £ 1.5 million, signing a 4-year contract with the club. As part of the deal, Huddersfield Town was followed by Boro midfielder Jacob Butterfield [6] . Adam quickly became the founding player of the Rivermen, making a ligament in midfield with team captain Grant Leadbitter .
