Early years

Jason Beh was born March 12, 1960 in New York , in the family of tax judge Renato William Bech and Bina House (both parents died in 2012: Bina in March, and Renato on July 7, at the age of 79). The family also brought up the brother of James Adam and two sisters - Eliza Ashley and Francesca [3] .

Jason attended Collegiate School, a prestigious private boys prep school in New York, where his best friends were John Kennedy Jr. and future actor David Duchovny. [4] According to Bech himself, at night they often spent time with the company on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum under the vigilant control of the US Secret Service [5] . When Bech was a teenager, he spent vacations in a summer camp with future columnist and writer Eric Rush [6]

Under the influence of Bech Kennedy, Jr. began to attend the theater club. A little later, Bech was involved in acting and David Duchovny [7] . Initially, Dukhovny planned to write and become a professor in the future, but when he was already working on his doctoral dissertation in philosophy , Beh convinced him to go to audition for television commercials.

In 1982, Jason graduated from Pomona College in Clermont ( California ) [8] . In his youth, along with Duchovny, Jason worked as a bartender [9] .

Career

Jason's film debut took place in 1985 in the film "Compromising Poses" , in which Susan Sarandon played the main role. In 1986, Beh got his first role on television - in the sitcom of the HBO channel "Nine-meter". He played with O.J. Simpson and Sam J. Johnson in the sequel to the Nine-Meter titled Training Camp: Bulls Come Back. John Wojis of The Seattle Times wrote: “The cast, which includes O. Jay Simpson, Sam Jones, and rookie Jason Beh, is amazing.” [10]

In 1988, Jason got the lead role in Monkey Tricks , directed by George Romero . Bech played Allan Mann, a law student and athlete who was paralyzed after a traffic accident. The Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper praised Bech’s play in this film: “Playing only with his face and voice, Jason Beh amazingly conveys the anger and rage of an active person who is forced to live passively” [11] .

In 1989, Bech played a hockey star in the NBC television movie about lawyer Perry Mason - “Perry Mason: The Case of the Star Killer” [12] . In 1991, Jason played the role of a policeman in the movie “ Thelma and Louise ” [13] , as well as the role of the beloved heroine Demi Moore in the 1997 film “ Soldier Jane ” [14] .

Jason played in such series as The Swordsman Outpost , Melrose Place , and in 1997 joined the cast of the popular Chicago Hope series, where he played electrician Danny Blaine, the beloved doctor Austin, performed by Christine Lahti [15] . In a 1997 interview with The Boston Herald, Bech talked about his respect for colleagues on the Chicago Hope series:“I think this is the best cast I've ever seen. Each of them is simply incredible. What about working with Kristin Lahti? I would give up a lot for this. She is so good, smart and dedicated. Yes, just working next to her, I grew up as an actor . " Speaking of his character in the series “Melrose Place” - a military man who hides his sexual orientation and is in love with Matt, played by Doug Sevant , - Beh remarked: “I thought we would have to kiss, but that was too much. Television is a very specific medium, and it is naive to think that everything is based solely on creative decisions. If something prevents them from selling their products, then this becomes the main consideration. But I am an actor. I will do whatever it takes . ”

Together with Moira Kelly in 1998, Jason played in the television drama CBS channel "Own and possess", where he played the role of police officer Sean McGrail [16] . Mike Duffy from the Detroit Free Press newspaper wrote: “There is a tender passion between the courageous and handsome Bech (“ Soldier Jane ”) and the dark-haired, unusually attractive Kelly (“ Little Odessa ”)” [17] . Kinney Littlefield, a columnist for The Orange County Register, said “Beh and Kelly have charm.” [18]

In subsequent years, Jason played in such series as: “ 4isla ”, “ CSI: Crime Scene New York ”, “ Love of the Widower ”, “ Think Like a Criminal ”, “ Veronica Mars ” and “Plantation” [19] [20] . In 2008, Jason played the exorcist Ray Purvis in the horror film "One Missed Call" [21] .

In 2009, Bech played a guest role in the popular television series Californication . He played the role of novelist Richard Bates, a friend of the protagonist Hank Moody (played by Bech's friend David Duchovny) [22] . In 2010, Jason joined the cast of director Paul Haggis ’s film “ Three Days to Escape, ” starring Elizabeth Banks , Russell Crowe , Brian Dennehy and Olivia Wilde .

Since 2014, Jason Beh - starring in the spin-off of the Chicago Firefighters series - Chicago Police .

Scientology

The early years and the decision to leave

In 1994, Jason attended acting courses taught by Scientologist Milton Katselas . [23] [24] Another Bodhi Scientologist Elfman gave Bech a book on Scientology from which he learned about the “technology” invented by Lafayette Ronald Hubbard , which is capable of giving superhuman opportunities. [23] And he soon took an active part in the advertising campaigns of the Church of Scientology , such as the campaign “What is Scientology?” Held in 1999 in Great Britain. [25] In 2005, Bech appeared in Scientology promotional videos. [24] In an interview with Fox News Channel host Roger Friedman, Beh said the head of the Church of Scientology, David Miscavige, is treated him like a " Scientology cover guy ." [26] Over the 12 years of his Scientology activity, Bech reached level V of the operating thetan and was involved in auditing . [23] [27] His wife was also a V-level operating thetan . [23] In addition, he admitted that he gave her USD $ 1 million for membership in the Church of Scientology . [28]

In 2007, Bech decided to leave the Church of Scientology and in April 2008 criticized her publicly. [27] One of the first people Jason hurried to see after leaving Scientology was David Duchovny . [29] Bech discussed the space opera Xenu with him, which both found amusing. [26] As long as Jason belonged to Scientologists, he could not communicate with Duchovny, as Scientologists considered him an enemy, the so-called “ overwhelming personality ". [26] [30]

Public Criticism

Jason Beh, Tori Christistman Mark Bunker and Andreas Heldal-Lund
(March 31, 2008)

Having broken all relations with the Church of Scientology, Bech met with Norwegian civic activist Andreas Heldal-Lund , founder of the site Operation “Mollusk” (xenu.net) who publishes critical articles about Scientology. He convinced him to meet with journalist Mark Bunker and give a frank interview. [23] In mid-April 2008, Bunker published a three-minute announcement of his three-hour interview with Beh on YouTube [26] , in which Jason Beh called Scientology “ very dangerous for your spiritual, psychological, mental, emotional health and development .” [31] and concluded: “ I have no agenda. I just want to help. [...] I had a rare opportunity to be a Scientologist, and, having visited him, to leave. And this is a prospect for those who are still there and have not left. " [32]

When Jason was asked if he was afraid that criticism of Scientology would interfere with his career, he joked: “ I probably won’t make any films for United Artists any time soon .” [23] This is because United Artists was revived as a joint venture by Scientologist Tom Cruise and his business partners, Managing Director Paula Wagner and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer ). [33]

As early as April 17, 2008, the video was removed from YouTube, but by that time it had been distributed and published by many users. [34] On the same day, Bunker's account was blocked and he saw the reason for this in copyright issues caused by passages from the Colbert Report that he published at his place. [34] [35] By April 18, 2008, at least 45 users had posted this video in their accounts. [36] On April 21, 2008, Mark Bunker posted a full interview on the Vimeo and Blip.tv websites . [37] [38] [39]

On April 28, 2008, Bech published a video message to David Miscavige, requesting confidential information that Scientologists collect during auditing sessions. [40] [41] In a message posted on Mollusk Operation website, Jason said: “ Since the Church of Scientology carefully monitors all anti-Scientology sites, I posted a letter here on xenu.net to make sure it gets to her. " . [34] He had previously attempted to contact Miscavige through the office of the International Center for Celebrity Church of Scientology , as well as through the press service, but in both cases was refused. [34] Beh told The Village Voice in an interview that this confidential information was also collected by actor Tom Cruise and other celebrity followers of Scientology, and noted: “ More people have left the Church of Scientology than there are currently. Despite this, they retained information about what was told in private conversations. Why do you want this information to continue to be stored? ". [40] Bech believes that the Scientology practice of breaking up relations is in there still exists and cites as an example the case of his four-year-old son, who was kicked out of the Scientology school. [42]

Bech protests against Scientology in New York on May 29, 2008.

Part of the interview with Bech Bunker was shown in the transmission of Nightline as a complement to the critical account of Scientology, David Miscavige’s niece, Jenna Miscavige Hill, . [40] Beh himself rejected television appearances with stories of his Scientology experience, stating the following: “ I just wanted to be sure that the story was not about me. Not about me. This story is about how to help others, what else remains in the cult or is considering joining . ” [40] Then I walked down the street and attempted to enter the Scientology building, but was stopped by three hired private security guards. [40] Then Bech returned to the protesters and tried to call John Carmichael, President of the Church of Scientology in New York “I called and asked John Carmichael, and said it was Jason Beh. Then he hung up. ” [43]

On May 29, 2008, Bech took part in a rally against the Church of Scientology near her building on 46th East Street in New York . [43] He turned to the 50 gathered protesters saying the following: “ What you guys do means so much to me, and so much to these people ... I'm just overwhelmed. I am ready to cry. You have no idea what a good deed you are doing . ” [43]

Bech speaks at a conference in Hamburg
(September 4, 2008)

In September 2008, Bech traveled to Europe, where in Hamburg, at a meeting with government officials, he spoke about his experiences with the Church of Scientology. [44] [45] Bech was invited by the Ministry of the Interior of the Hamburg Government to participate in the conference “This is Scientology! Papers from the USA ”organized by the head of the Scientology Working Group of the Hamburg Department of the Interior Ursula Caberta , where he made a presentation . [45] Beh proposed placing a warning sign next to the Scientology building, like those placed on packs of cigarettes, and the next day a member of the Scientology Working Group reported that such a sign was installed next to the Church of Scientology in Berlin. [44] Beh said that Scientologists hired private detectives to keep track of him in Europe. [46]

In May 2009, Beh was a guest of the BBC World Service program “ What Do You Need to Say ”, Where he recounted his recollections of the early days in Scientology:“ I thought it was something that could work miracles, and that it was a group of the most disinterested people who were eager to help humanity, and I wanted to be part of them . ” [47] Bech criticized the Scientology leadership, including David Miscavige: “ I believe that there are probably things in Scientology that are valuable and can help people — my main contradiction is not related to Scientology per se , it is related to the Scientology organization “I consider her depraved, and probably with an attempt on a crime , which refers to the people who are at the head of Scientology, especially David Miscavige ... ” [47]

In 2010, Bech took part in the documentary of John Sweeney The Secrets of Scientology , released by the BBC Television in the framework of the television show "Panorama" based on a journalistic investigation dating back to the Sweeney documentary , created in 2007, Scientology and I "Where interviews were made with former senior members of the Church of Scientology. Beh said that the time spent in Scientology, which he considers a type of racket , cost him "millions of dollars."

In 2015, he took part in the filming of a documentary film by Alex Gibney The Obsession (The Path to the Clear : Scientology and the Prison of Faith) 2015 about Scientology and the Church of Scientology based on Lawrence Wright ’s Pulitzer Prize book The Way to the Clear: Scientology, Hollywood and the Prison of Faith "( 2013 ). [48]

Personal life

Jason’s sister Francesca Bech is an author and singer who released the album in 1991 [3] . His great-great-grandfather is Charles S. Denin in the 1900s, was governor of Illinois and a senator in the US government [49] .

Bech witnessed the wedding of his close friend David Duchovny and actress Thea Leoni . [50] .

In 1999, Jason had a car accident. After he was intubated, he tried to pull the tube out of his mouth. As a result, Beh's voice became hoarse, which is now his trademark [51] .

In 2000, Bech married Angie Jean [52] .

In one of the interviews, Jason pronounces his surname “Run”, with emphasis on the last syllable [53] .
