Biography
The son of Italian pastry chefs Mary Tubito Valastro Pinto and Bartolo Valastro. Bartolo "Buddy" Valastro, Jr. was born March 3, 1977 in Hoboken , New Jersey , USA [1] . His mother, Mary Tubito Valastro Pinto (born April 17, 1948), had Italian roots, his father, Bartolo Valastro (born in 1940) in the United States [1] .
When his mother was six years old in 1954, her parents decided to emigrate to the United States. At the age of twelve, in 1960 she met her future husband Bartolo Valastro, and at the first meeting she told him: “You will be my life partner” [1] . In 1964, his parents decided to go into business and bought the Carlo's Bake Shop, a confectionery founded in 1910. Mary Tubito Valastro Pinto was the administrator, and Bartolo Valastro was the chief pastry chef . On July 25, 1965, Buddy's parents got married [1] .
Buddy was the youngest in the family, he has four older sisters: Grace Faugno (born in 1966), Maddalena Castano (born in 1967), Mary Scarrone (born in 1969) and Lisa Gonzalez (born in 1974).
Since 1983, at the age of 6, Buddy Valastro began working in the confectionery of his parents [1] .
At the age of 8, he became interested in sports (mixed martial arts, practicing Brazilian jiu-jitsu with his friends), he said that he liked it, but later was forced for family reasons to return to the bakery.
On April 17, 1988, at age 11, Buddy baked his first cake. He made it for his mother, who was forty years old, father Valastro wanted to decorate the cake himself, but his son’s perseverance took his toll. The cake was stuffed with chocolate and vanilla soaked in Italian rum . As a decoration, he added the phrase “I Love Mom”.
It was hard for Valastro to imagine a successful career as one of America 's best pastry chefs and decorators. At school, he was always struggling with art. [2]
Buddy began his career at Carlo's Bake Shop with washing pots and pans. Watching the work of his father, Valastro realized that he had inherited the family gene for baking and he wanted to do it. At age 12, he began to help his parents clean the family bakery.
In 1991, Buddy began to bake wedding cakes and was studying recipes for their preparation.
When Valastro turned 15 years old, his father took him to Sicily for a year, thanks to which Buddy mastered the Italian language perfectly.
He attended Bergen County Technical High School in Hackensack , New Jersey. [1] Valastro has always sought to ensure that the confectionery of his parents was recognized as the best in the whole world.
When he was 16 years old, he met his future wife Elizabeth and immediately fell in love.
Buddy's father passed away in 1994, leaving his son as a successor.
On June 22, 2017, at the age of 69, the mother of Baddi Valastro, Maria Valastro, died. She often appeared in the early years on the King of Confectioners show and helped her son Buddy publish his books and manage the bakery, but after being diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in 2012, she left.
