Born in Pittenheim in the family of a priest.
Educated at the University of Glasgow and Oxford Balliol College .
In the years 1880-99. Member of Oxford College of Jesus. Then a professor of Latin at the University of St. Andrews (1899-1937).
Member of the American Academy of Medieval Studies (1926) [5] .
Died at St Andrews.
Author of articles for the British Encyclopedia of the 1911 edition. Some of his books have been translated into French and German.
Honorary Doctor (LL.D.) University of Glasgow.
