Story
The young forester Grigory Lyuty dreams of becoming a farmer and marrying Christina. After studying at a Moscow institute, the son of a local rich man Dmitry Krutov returns to the village. He, like Gregory, is in love with Christina. Taking advantage of Fierce’s absence, Dmitry kidnaps Christina with the help of his friends. Gregory in the middle of the night finds them on the banks of the river and suits Dmitry with a good thrashing. Christina's sister Tatyana is deeply in love with Gregory and openly admits this to him.
Dmitry and his friends attack Lyutogo. The seriously wounded Gregory is left to die in the coastal reeds. Neighbor Lyutykh, Panko’s grandfather, finds Gregory and brings him to the hospital. Gregory is slowly recovering in the hospital and does not intend to complain anywhere to alleviate the attackers with their influential fathers.
A young artist Maxim Zagrebelny arrives in the village from Moscow . Among his paintings is a half-naked portrait of Christina, which causes a quarrel between Grigory and Maxim. Later, a quarrel arises between Maxim and drunk Dmitry on the edge of a river cliff. During the fight, Maxim falls off a cliff and crashes to death. Dmitry in horror admits his deed to his father. Krutov Sr., along with his friends - the police chief Krivonos and the prosecutor Pyatibrat - rig the evidence and facts so that Grigory Lyutyi is accused of the murder of Maxim.
After serving 14 years, Gregory returns to the village. Kristina has long been married to another, Tatyana became the wife of Dmitry Krutov, and Dmitry himself with his former friends at the head of the village administration.
