Biography

Born on September 3, 1889 in the city of Gorazde in Austria-Hungary. He is originally from a family of Sephardic Jews who migrated from Bulgaria [1] . He graduated from primary and secondary school in Sarajevo, moved to Vienna, where he studied medicine at the university [2] . He worked as a doctor in the cities of Gorazde and Fojnica in 1921-1925 [3] .

In 1925, Samokovlia began working at the Sarajevo hospital in Koshevo. Around the same time, his first stories and novels began to be published: his first works appeared in the magazine "Hebrew Belly" ( Serbo-Croatian. Jewish Life ), then he began to engage in separate translations from Hebrew and Yiddish. In 1927, his first short story Rafin Dvor was published, published in Serbian Literary Gazette . Two years later, the collection "From Spring to Spring."

The April war began in April 1941: Isak was expelled from military service as a Jew by birth, but at the last moment he was nevertheless called to the post of a medical orderly, who was supposed to fight against the epidemic of typhus. After the establishment of the Independent State of Croatia, he was arrested. Since 1942, Isak worked in a hospital in Sarajevo, under the strict supervision of ustashi. In the spring of 1945, shortly before the end of the war, he still escaped from custody and hid for a long time until the war ended.

After the war, Isak Samokovliya continued to be published in publishing houses of the Slovak Republic Bosnia and Herzegovina and throughout Yugoslavia. In 1946, his largest short story collection, The Porter Samuel, was published. Samokovliya held posts in various literary organizations and even led the Commonwealth of Writers of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 1948-1951 he headed the Brazda magazine, from 1951 until his death he worked as the editor of the Svetlost publishing house.

On January 15, 1955, Isak Samokovliya died in Sarajevo and was buried in the old Jewish cemetery on Mount Trebevich. After the death of the writer, the movie “ Khanka ", Based on the book of the same name by Samokovliya and shown a year later at the Cannes Film Festival . The film was directed by Slavko Vorkapich [4] .
