Career
College
In 1994, Tim Floyd persuaded Kato to move to Iowa and play for the University of Iowa . On average, Kelvin scored 11 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks per game.
NBA
In 1997, he was drafted under number 15 at the Dallas Mavericks , but was immediately handed over to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Chris Anstey . In two seasons for Portland, Kato averaged 3.8 and 3.5 points per game, respectively. In 1999, he was included in the Blazers' basketball team, who went to the Houston Rockets , which in turn was given to Scotty Pippen .
He spent five years in Houston , showing a score of 8.7 points per game in 1999/2000 , and started in all matches except for two games that were in the 2001/02 and 2003/04 seasons. October 28, 1999 Kato signed a six-year contract with the club in the amount of 42 million dollars. In 2004, seven players from the Rockets and Orlando Magic exchanged ː Steve Francis , Cattino Mobley and Kato instead of Tracy McGrady , Juvan Howard , Tyrone Lew and Rhys Gaines . In the 2004/05 season , he played 50 matches with Magic, but after a shoulder injury his playing minutes became less.
On February 15, 2006, Orlando exchanged Kato with the Detroit Pistons for their first-round number in the 2007 NBA Draft for Darko Milicic and Carlos Arroyo . Kelvin finished the season with the Pistons. He spent the 2006/2007 season at the New York Knicks .
