The 2017 Ice Hockey World Championship in Division III is a IIHF- sponsored ice hockey competition held from April 10 to 16, 2017 in the capital of Bulgaria, Sofia .

Tournament Rules
The tournament was held in two stages. At the first stage, teams competed in groups. At the second stage, the teams that took first and second place in the groups played the tournament according to the Olympic system. The winner received the right to play in the group In the second division of 2018 in the next season. The teams that took the last two places were eliminated in the qualifying tournament of 2018 .
The tournament in the III division and the qualification tournament were originally planned. In September 2016, it was decided to cancel the qualification tournament, and two teams from the qualification tournament were transferred to the III division. Shortly before the start, the national team of Bosnia and Herzegovina withdrew from the tournament. It was decided not to change the tournament grid, and the Bosnian team decided to count the defeats with a score of 0: 5 in all matches. [one]

Venue Choices
One application was filed for the right to host a tournament in the third division: Sofia ( Bulgaria ). It was finally approved at the IIHF Congress in Moscow during the 2016 World Hockey Championship .
