History
The church region of Augsburg and Swabia was formed only in 1971 and is the youngest of all six Bavarian church regions . Nevertheless, Protestants appeared here at the beginning of the 16th century. First of all, in the free imperial cities of Augsburg , Kaufbeuren , Kempten , Lindau , Memmingen and Nördlingen , in the areas around Memmingen, Neu-Ulm and the natural region of Nördlingen Ries , as well as within the isolated boundaries of the imperial knights , former vassals of the Holy Roman Emperor . Many Protestant parishes were organized in the process of industrialization based on railway construction at the turn of the 20th century. Exiles ( German: Heimatvertriebene ) - many of them Gospel denominations - also created their Protestant churches after World War II . In connection with these historical events, there is now an abundance of diverse confessional movements in Bavarian Swabia . In the south, especially in the Allgäu region ( German Allgäu ), Protestants live in a predominantly traditional Catholic environment , unlike Rhys , where there are a lot of villages with only Protestant inhabitants. [3]
The first regional bishop in 1971 was Walter Rupprecht. Since 2009, the Church Region of Augsburg has been led by regional bishop Michael Grabov. [four]
