History
It was intended to commemorate the successful invasion of England (which never really took place). The first stone was laid on October 9, 1804. Works were completely stopped in 1814 with the fall of Napoleon .
The column was completed in 1821, on top of it were placed the royal symbols of the Bourbons . After the July Revolution of 1830 , the crown was removed, the lilies were replaced with stars.
The statue of Napoleon by Bosio was completed by the time Napoleon’s ashes returned to Paris on December 15, 1840. Placed on top of the column on August 15, 1841 by the future emperor Napoleon III .
