Jozef Stanislav Tischner ( Polish: Józef Stanisław Tischner ); (March 12, 1931 - June 28, 2000) - Polish priest and philosopher . The first chaplain of the Solidarity trade union , he was an exceptional moral authority and one of the most respected public figures in Polish society during and after anti-communist speeches.

Biography
Józef Tischner was born in the town of Stary Sчcz to a gourale family and grew up in the village of Lopusna in southeastern Poland. He studied at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow . In the 1970s, Tishner, as a publicist, gained popularity among opposition circles. In the 1980s, he was considered the semi-official confessor of the Solidarity movement. His work was supported personally by Pope John Paul II .
After the fall of the communist regime in 1989, Tischner continued to preach the importance of ethics in the new capitalist Poland. In September 1999, he was awarded the Order of the White Eagle , Poland's highest award.
Tischner still remains a controversial figure among the Polish right and the Catholic episcopate. He often criticized the religiousness of the Poles, calling it "flat as a pancake", and also accused the Polish clergy of extreme conservatism , political engagement and anti-Semitism . He was a member of the program council of the liberal party Unia Liberty .
