Group History
The group was created by Philip Nikanorov as a schoolboy in 1987, when Philip Nikanorov (Filya) (September 17, 1975 - May 2, 2007) met Dmitry Vasilyev (Dim Dim). It turned out that they both loved the music of Bob Marley and shared the faith of thousands Jamaicans. "Caribbean" began performing in 1991. Initially, the group performed compositions in the reggae and ska style, then musical interests shifted towards the dub. There were also elements of rock music. In 1999, the band released their first album. He has compiled ten impressive dub compositions.
Then she immediately fell into the sphere of interests of the Tallinn-based Cosmos Control company, specializing in the distribution of the most interesting music in the countries of Scandinavia. The group took part in many Reggae and DUB festivals (Russia, Finland, Estonia, Italy) and performed with artists such as Mad Professor (UK) and Zion Train (UK), Lee Scratch Perry. The concerts and recordings were attended by musicians from Jah Division, 2va Samoleta, Leningrad, Netslov, Zion Train and many others.
The best experts, according to many, “Caribbean” combined in their work the mood of St. Petersburg with Jamaican nostalgia. Songs gently envelop and immerse in energy hypnosis. "Caribbean" masterfully impose calm melodies and chords that sound like twice as slow on a fast rhythm. No tediousness - not even the nine-minute Wonder Island - a psychedelic version of the animated hit Chunga-Changa recorded at a concert at the Propaganda club - listens for one breath. One of the most popular hits of the Caribbean is Autumn, where a sample from Yuri Entin's song Forest Deer is involved.
In 2007, Philip Nikanorov was seriously ill with bowel cancer, fans of the group raised money for his operation. The operation was carried out a few days before the death of Philip, and it did not lead to improvements. A few days later, on May 2, 2007, Philip Nikanorov died in intensive care at 32 years of age. The group ceased to exist.
