Story
The drama film tells about life in a juvenile correctional colony. Young Yakub falls into the colony out of false solidarity, admitting the theft committed by the "sheriff" of their youth gang. He hopes that the "sheriff" will appreciate his gesture and fairly share all the loot between all members of the gang. Convinced of this gives Yakub the strength to endure the unbearable conditions of the colony. However, reality is often much more cruel than naive ideals and false friendships inside a gang.

Filming
The film was preceded by a long collection of material from various correctional colonies. Dimitry Plikhta wrote a film novel called “Criminals” in which he reflects the problems of morally immature and stray youth. The co-author of the script for the film “The Sheriff behind the Bars” was Vladimir Valenta, who wrote the script for the film by Slovak director Ian Kadar “Defendant” in 1963. Plikhta, as an experienced documentary filmmaker, chose an impartial and objective view of things, causing the viewer a sense of naturalness of the events taking place on the screen. It does not analyze the causes of moral misconduct by young people, but simply reflects the severity of the punishment for such misconduct.
Along with well-known actors such as William Poloni, Zlatomir Vacek, Vladimir Ptachek, young criminals were played by young actors from Bratislava, Brno and Prague - Otakar Praisner, Jiri Zedlmeyer, Martin Shtepanek, Peter Svojtka.
The film was shot in a penal colony for teenagers in the now defunct Czech town of Libkowice, as well as in the vicinity of Bratislava.
The filming period is from July 5 to October 30, 1965. The budget of the film was 2,286,000 Czechoslovak crowns.
The film premiered on March 4, 1966.
