History and Activities

The university was founded by the Greek government on November 11, 1964 as an independent educational institution. Located in the center of Patras. It has a campus area of ​​about 600 acres , located near the city of Rio and having the same name. The campus was opened on November 30, 1966, when the city of Patras celebrates the day of its patron - Apostle Andrew , depicted on the university logo. A second campus was later built in Agrinion .

The university consists of five schools, including 24 faculties:

  1. School of Natural Sciences (founded in 1966).
  2. Engineering (polytechnic) school (established in 1983).
  3. School of Humanities and Social Sciences (founded in 1989).
  4. School of Medicine (founded in 1977).
  5. School of Business and Management (established in 2013).

The university has 112 laboratories in which students conduct scientific research, including the European research programs ESPRIT, EURECA, RACE, LRE, BRITE-EURAM, IMPACT and others. The work of the university is evaluated by the Hellenic Quality Assurance and Accreditation Agency (HQAA).

Interestingly, the Phitosia plant listed in the Red Book of Greece, protected at the pan-European and national level, is growing in the university’s botanical garden. [2]
