In January 1997, Hurtado met with WBC Welterweight World Champion American Pernell Whitaker . At the beginning of the 1st round, Hurtado in the 1st attack hit the right hook in the head, after which Whitaker was on the floor. The American immediately got up. During the countdown, the American laughed. The Cuban acted a lot, moved around the ring and worked as the 2nd number. At the end of the 5th round, Hurtado struck several blows on the back of the leaning opponent. The referee fined the Cuban one point. In the middle of the 6th round Hurtado held a deuce in the head of an American. The blows were not strong, but the poorly standing Whitaker could not resist, and sank to his knee. The referee counted the knockdown. The American did not agree with the referee. In the middle of the 11th round, Whitaker at the ropes struck a left hook to the head. Hurtado staggered. The American threw nine more consecutive accurate left hooks in the head. The challenger hung lifelessly between the rope. The referee, having intervened late, stopped the fight. The battered Cuban came to his senses for several minutes.

In November 1998, Hurtado stepped into the ring against WBC welterweight world champion Konstantin Tszyu . Hurtado lost by knockout in the 5th round.
In May 2002, a fight was held for the vacant WBA Welterweight World Championship title between Diosbelis Hurtado and Randall Bailey . The Cuban knocked out the opponent in the 7th round.
In October 2002, Hurtado lost by knockout in the 2nd round to Vivian Harris .
