In August 1992, Wilfrido Rocha knocked out the fight for the vacant world lightweight champion title according to the WBC .
In August 1994, Gonzalez knocked out the undefeated Levander Johnson .

In March 1998, a duel was held for the vacant WBC belt between Miguel Angel Gonzalez and Julio Cesar Chavez . The fight was close. Commentators on Showtime have announced the following ratings - Ferdy Pacheco put 115-113 in favor of Gonzalez, and former light heavyweight champion Bobby Chaz - 114-114. A separate referee decision recorded a draw. After the verdict was announced, spectators who supported Chavez threw the ring with garbage.

Since Julio Cesar Chavez refused Gonzalez's revenge, preferring to re-fight with Oscar De La Hoya , the WBC welterweight title was played between Miguel Angel Gonasales and Konstantin Tszyu . Tszyu dominated the whole battle. In the 5th round, he beat the Mexican badly, but he survived. At the beginning of the 10th round, the corner of Gonzalez asked the referee to stop the fight.
