History

The construction of the boulevard began in 1884 on the site of the Nikolaev battery destroyed by the French. In 1885, trees and shrubs were planted here, recreational areas with sea views were arranged. In the western part, a yacht club with a reading room and a restaurant was built .

The new boulevard was called Primorsky, although it was often called the Erantsevsky Garden by the name of a hydraulic engineer, former mayor Fedor Nikolaevich Erantsev , who took an active part in its construction. In common people there was another name - “Primbul” .

In the 1890s, a theater was built on the boulevard. At different times, famous stage masters M.S. Shchepkin , F.I. Chaliapin , V.F. Komissarzhevskaya and others performed here. In 1900, the Moscow Art Theater was on tour, showing Chekhov's plays The Seagull and Uncle Vanya . The Sevastopol audience warmly received the performances of their author, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov , who specially came from Yalta . The theater building has not survived to our days.

Almost simultaneously with the theater, the building of a marine biological station with an aquarium was built on Primorsky Boulevard - the first scientific organization in Russia to study the flora and fauna of the sea.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Primorsky Boulevard was divided into two parts. The first was paid. For entry into it on summer evenings, when the naval orchestra played, it was necessary to pay 10 cents. Entrance was free of charge behind the fence where the boulevard overlooked the count's pier , but entry to the boulevard with lower ranks and with dogs was prohibited [2] .

The boulevard was repeatedly reconstructed and expanded. In 1949, architects P.V. Kumpan, G. G. Schwabauer and I. A. Saburov developed a project after which Primorsky Boulevard changed significantly: its length increased, a cast-iron fence appeared, and the green outfit of the boulevard became richer and more diverse. The new part of Primorsky lay from the Palace of Pioneers (now the Palace of Childhood and Youth) to the Lunacharsky Theater .

Monuments

To the 50th anniversary of the defense of Sevastopol in 1854-1855, a Monument to the Scuttled Ships appeared on Primorsky Boulevard. On the embankment of the boulevard, the place where the floating bridge began, on which the defenders of Sevastopol on the night of August 27-28, 1855 crossed to the North side, was indicated.

Here, on 28.XI.1905, the royal sailors brutally shot the revolutionary sailors of the cruiser "Ochakovo"

In 1955, a memorial plaque with the inscription in Russian was installed on the retaining wall of the granite embankment of Primorsky Boulevard:

Later it was replaced by a cast-iron plate flanked by sea anchors [3] .

On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the liberation of Sevastopol from Nazi invaders, a memorial sign to the squadron of the Black Sea Fleet was inaugurated on the embankment of Primorsky Boulevard.
