Biography

Maxim Karlovich Kantor was born on December 22, 1957 in Moscow. Maxim's father is a philosopher, art historian, design theorist Karl Moiseevich Kantor , the founder of the magazine "Decorative Art". Grandfather - mineralogist and Hispanic playwright Moses Isaakovich Kantor . Mother, Tatyana Sergeevna, a geneticist, breeder, author of hybrids, which were granted foreign patents. The elder brother Vladimir Kantor is a philosopher and literary critic.

In 1980, Maxim Kantor graduated from the Moscow Polygraphic Institute . Since 1982 participated in informal exhibitions. In 1983, he founded the Red House underground group in Moscow. In 1984, at the Moscow Institute of Philosophy, he was the organizer and speaker of a one-day group exhibition.

In 2016, Maxim Kantor received German citizenship. Lives and works on the island of Re ( France ), in Berlin and Oxford .

Painting

Cantor as an artist had a great influence on Michelangelo , Mantegna , Goya, Bruegel , Van Gogh , Grunewald and Petrov-Vodkin .

In 1997, he represented Russia at the Venice Biennale with the personal exhibition "Criminal Chronicle".

Since 1988, actively exhibited as an artist around the world, including in Russia and in many European countries. Literary creativity

In 1993, Maxim Kantor began his literary activity as a collection of stories “House on the Wasteland” with his own illustrations.

Novels

In 2006, the novel “Drawing Textbook” (Moscow: “OGI”) was published, provoking heated discussions in the press, “In the other direction” (2009) and “Tips for a lone smoker” (2010).

In 2013, the novel “Red Light” was published (in 2010, an excerpt from the novel was published in the anthology “Four steps from war” [7] ). The novel received positive responses in the press [8] [9] and entered the shortlist of the national bestseller's literary award [10] [11] and in the short list of the Big Book Award [12] , and was reprinted “Drawing Textbook” .
