Mappings

In 2014 , the Republic of Moldova also conducted its second census . Unlike the previous census period (1989–2004), in 2004–2014 the present population of the PMR decreased less intensively (by 14.47%). In Moldova, the rate of decline has increased and the population has fallen by 0.4 million people, or 11.4%.

Urbanization

According to the census, 333 thousand inhabitants of the republic (69.9%) lived in urban conditions, 142 thousand were villagers (30.1%) [2] . For comparison, in 2014 , 995,227 people were enrolled in cities in Moldova, and 1,918,054 people in rural areas. Thus, in Moldova, the prevalence of the rural population remains: its ratio with the urban population is 65.8% by 34.2%, which is almost the exact opposite of the Transnistrian one. Also, during the intercensal period in the PMR, urbanization progressed (from 68.0% to 69.9%), while on the contrary, deurbanization processes were observed in Moldova.

Although the proportion of all major nationalities decreased, the most noticeable was a drop in the share of Ukrainians (from 28.8% to 22.9%). The proportion of Moldavians also fell by 3.3% points, as a result of which the relative majority in the national composition of the republic for the first time since its inception was formed by Russians (29.1%), although their proportion decreased slightly.
