Description

Representatives of this family are characterized as large semi-aquatic reptiles resembling real crocodiles , but with much thinner faces. The thin muzzle is used by the gawial for fishing, but it is not strong enough to allow them to capture large prey, like real crocodiles and some alligator ( black caimans ).

Genetic studies indicate that the gavialovs may be more appropriate to reduce to the subfamily as part of the family of real crocodiles [5] [6] .
