Parisian medieval painting of the 1300-1500s is the art of the historical era when Paris was the main center of European scholarship . Already in the early Gothic period, France stood out among other countries in terms of miniature painting , and its manuscript illustrators, alyuminieres ( French enlumineurs ), were famous everywhere. In the sixteenth century, the production of manuscripts, ceasing to be exclusively occupied by monks and monastery workshops , became a very common profession among the laity, among whom there are a large number of calligraphers and draftsmen who satisfy the demand for luxurious illustrated prayer books and reading books that has increased in the courts of the sovereigns and in high society . . In the second half of the XIV century, such masters were especially patronized in France by King Charles V and his younger brothers, the Dukes Jean of Berry and Philip the Bold of Burgundy [1] .
In compiling the list, the eponymous two-volume book of the medieval historian, the former curator of the Louvre Museum Charles Sterling ( Charles Sterling ; 1901-1991) [2] was used .
