Story
Filmed in the genre of political grotesque melodrama, quite rare in the cinema of the USSR in the 1930s. The film, scripted by Yevgeny Ryss and Vsevolod Voevodin, was originally called the Peace Prize and talked about a miserable and ridiculous man who unsuccessfully tried to stop the erupting militarism and arrange personal happiness.
Cinema expert Pyotr Bagrov in an article in the journal Cinema Notes No. 60 “Its scale of height. Alexander Ivanov: director and memoirist ”wrote:
“From the aesthetic side, some episodes of the script were not feasible, given the Soviet realities of the 1930s. For example, a crazy officer, played by Nikolai Cherkasov with an almost surreal grotesque, praising the war, fell into ecstasy and tore off his wig and prostheses: ear, arms and both legs. There were other scenes unbelievable for that time. After another speech by Stalin, the attitude towards pacifism changed dramatically, and almost the entire political line had to be cut out of the picture. Thus, the Peace Prize turned into the Marriage of Jan Knucke. ”
