Career
He received his doctorate in law from the University of Linz (1980). He then completed postgraduate management in the city of Friborg.
From 1980 to 1992, he worked at the Upper Austrian Economic Chamber, including as head of the marketing department. From 1992 to 2000, he served as Secretary General of the Austrian Economic League in Vienna. In 2000, he was appointed Deputy Secretary General of the Austrian Chamber of Economics, being in this position until 2008. He was also a local politician in Agorni from 1991 to 1997. Member of the People’s Party. He was elected to the Austrian parliament on February 8, 2000. Elected chairman of the Rohrbach district organization in May 2002.
December 2, 2008 was appointed Federal Minister of Economics, Family and Youth in a coalition government led by Prime Minister Werner Fayman . In the same year, he also became vice president of the Austrian Energy Agency.
He was one of the leading successor candidates to Joseph Prell , who left the party leadership in April 2011. Later he became deputy federal chairman of the People’s Party, deputy chairman of the Industrial Institute of Science.
After reprofiling the Ministry of Economy, Family and Youth, on December 16, 2013 he headed the new ministry - science, research and economics.
From May 9 to 17, 2016 (between the resignation of Werner Fayman and the assumption of office of Christian Kern) - Acting Federal Chancellor of the country.
On May 10, 2017, the Mitterlener announced his resignation as vice chancellor (effective May 15) and ÖVP chairman.
