Wajda ribbed is one of the most widespread species of the genus [2] .

Botanical description

The life form of Wajda ribbed is a biennial, very rarely an annual. Annual and biennial individuals have a different number of vegetative shoot metamers , but belong to the same phenorithmotype (they are characterized by the same rhythm of seasonal development). In biennial specimens of Wajda, ribbed shoots usually consist of 50-60 metameres, and in one-year specimens, from 23-27 [3] .

The stem is erect, from 40 to 120 cm tall [4] . Taproot, branched [5] .

Basal leaves oblong or obversely-lanceolate, slightly wavy along the edge, narrowed into petiole. Stem leaves are sessile, semistebral, lanceolate with an arrow-shaped base [6] .

The common inflorescence is a complex shield of ten or more paracladia. Each paraklady in turn carries branches of the third order, representing brushes with 15–20 flowers [3] . Petals are yellow, oblong-obovate, with a wedge-shaped nail, up to 3 mm long and about 2 mm wide. Sepals are bare, 1.5 times shorter than the petals. Pedicels with fruits are deflected down, bare or shortly pubescent at both ends, 5-8 mm long [7] .

Fruits woad ribbed - pods. Despite the ripening of the fruits, brownish buds or underdeveloped flowers remain at the tops of the hands at this time. In ripened fruits, the stalk is bent and the pods drop downward.

Sprouting of Wajda ribbed seeds can occur in the fall of this year and the spring of next year. The latter option is observed more often. Seeds do not lose their viability for at least three years [3] .

Spread

The natural range of Wajda ribbed is the steppe zone of the Russian Plain and Western Siberia, as well as the steppe areas of Eastern Siberia [8] . Outside Russia, it is found in the Caucasus, Central Asia and northern Mongolia [6] .

It prefers stony areas of steppes, gravelly slopes, pebbles, sand banks; can rise to 2,200 meters above sea level.

Yu. E. Alekseev (2014) for the first time discovered several long-lived ribbed adventitious Vaida populations in the zone of coniferous-deciduous forests of Zaochye in the Kashirsky district of the Moscow region . Here, thickets of plants occupy a steep gravelly slope of the southwestern exposure next to a railroad track about 30 m long. Five-year observations (2009−2013) showed that the population of Isatis costata changes annually. However, flowering and fruiting specimens develop every year. Thus, the plant annually goes through the full life cycle and forms viable seeds [3] .

Economic value and use

Isatis costata, like other representatives of the genus, has long been used to obtain blue paint [6] .

Weida ribbed - a good melliferous plant and valuable forage plant. In winter hardiness, it is not inferior to winter bread and far exceeds winter rapeseed and rape. As early spring feed Isatis costata comes to use a decade earlier than winter rye. In a number of areas of Weida, ribbed is introduced into the culture as a pasture plant. [five]

In the State Register of Breeding Achievements of Russia, the variety Vajda ribbed - Volzhanka [9] [10] has been approved for use.

Medical use

In folk medicine, Isatis costata is used for diseases of the spleen, infectious diseases, and poisoning.

In oriental medicine is used in the treatment of meningitis , encephalitis , hepatitis .

Externally used for furunculosis , ringworms , wounds and cuts [11] .
