GFriend ( 여자 친구 ; sometimes styled by GFRIEND ; also known as Girlfriend ) is a South Korean girl group formed in 2015 by Source Music. The group includes six girls: Sovon , Yerin, Eunha, Yuju , Sinbi, Omji. The group debuted on January 15, 2015 with the mini-album “Seasons of Glass”. [one]

GFriend has won many awards as "Best Female Newbie." [2] On July 23, the band released the mini-album Flower Bud , which cemented the group’s success on the Korean music scene. In 2016, they returned to the scene with their third Snowflake mini-album, managing to top the charts of music shows with the title track “ Rough ”. In July 2016, the band released their first full-length album, LOL , which was an incredible commercial success. In 2017, GFriend returned with a new concept with their fourth mini-album, The Awakening , and pre-orders for the album exceeded 100,000 copies. GFriend released their fifth mini-album, Parallel . In August 2017, the album was reissued a month later under the name Rainbow . In 2018, GFriend held their first concert since their debut under the name Season Of GFriend [3] and later their first Asian tour of the same name. [4] GFriend released their sixth mini-album, Time for the Moon Night , in April 2018 and the special Sunny Summer mini-album in July 2018. GFriend debuted in Japan with the compilation, “GFriend 1st Best,” in May 2018. In January 2019, GFriend released their second full-length album, Time For Us . In July 2019, they released their seventh mini-album, Fever Season .
Content
History
2015: Season of Glass , Flower Bud, and Popularity
On January 15, 2015, GFriend debuted with the Season of Glass mini-album. [5] The title track, Glass Bead, debuted at number 12 on the Gaon Weekly Chart. [6] [7] On January 16, the group made an official debut on the KBS channel Music Bank music show. On the YouTube video portal, the video for the song “Glass Bead” is located at 9th place in the ranking of “The Most Viewed K-Pop Clips in the World in January 2015”. [8] On January 28, 2015, Billboard mentioned GFriend as one of the five K-Pop groups, the work of which must be familiarized with in 2015. [9]
After a break of several months, on July 23, GFriend returned to the scene with their second mini-album “Flower Bud” and released a video for the title track “Me Gustas Tu”. [10] On the same day, promotion of the new GFriend album began on Mnet’s M! Countdown music show. [eleven]
The group attracted the attention of the general public in September 2015 after the advent of the fancam (fan recording of the concert) of the song “Me Gustas Tu”. During the performance on the stage wet from the rain, the girls fell 9 times (Yuju - 8, Sinby - 1), but did not stop the performance; in connection with which the group was praised for their endurance and professionalism. On September 17, 2015, the band started talking about the news again, this time as the only female band nominated for the “Best Korean Act 2015” at the MTV Europe Music Awards, along with bands such as B1A4 , BTS , GOT7 and VIXX . [14]
2016: “Snowflake” , first wins on music shows, first full-length album “LOL”
On January 25, 2016, the band released its third mini-album, entitled “Snowflake”. The title song was chosen “Rough”. Rough is the final part of the school trilogy, which also consists of the previously released Glass Bead and Me Gustas Tu. On the day of the album’s release, GFriend held their first showcase, where they performed old songs, and also presented songs from the new album to the public. During the showcase, the band announced the official name for their fandom: “Buddy” (Russian: “friend”). Gfriend began promoting their Snowflake album on January 26, 2016 at The Show's SBS MTV music program. The album debuted at number 10 on the Billboard world album chart [15] , and the title track “Rough” took YouTube 3rd place in the “Most Viewed K-Pop Clips in the World in January 2016” rating. February 2, 2016 GFriend received the first award for the song “Rough” on the music show “The Show”. Subsequently, the girls won another 14 victories in music shows, including their first triple crown in M! Countdown, Music Bank, Show Champion and Inkigayo. With 15 victories, they became the second girl group in the history of K-Pop, which has the highest number of awards during the holding positions on the charts after Apink , which received 17 awards for their song “Luv”. On June 15, it became known that GFriend and Mamamoo will take part in the new season of Showtime. The first full-length album of the band “LOL” was released on July 11, which stands for “Laughing Out Loud” and “Lots of Love”. 60,000 copies of the album were pre-ordered. [20] On July 19, GFriend received their first award with the title track "Navillera" at The Show. [21]
In 2016, the total amount of GFriend awards at music shows was 29. The group set a record among women's groups in the number of awards for the year, and took second place among the groups as a whole, behind only EXO .
2017: The Awakening , Parallel , Rainbow
On February 23, 2017, it was announced that GFriend would release a new album on March 6. [22] On February 27, the title of the upcoming album, “The Awakening”, and the title single, “Fingertip”, became known. [23] [24] The album was pre-ordered over 100,000 times, which surpassed their previous highest result of 60,000 pre-ordered copies of the album “LOL”. [25] Also, the album debuted at number five on the Billboard world album chart. [26] On March 14 and April 11, GFriend with the song “Fingertip” won two awards at The Show.
On August 1, 2017, GFriend released the fifth mini-album “ Parallel ”, and premiered the video for the main single “Love Whisper”. In the first day, he scored more than 9 million views, ranking fifth in the views among all kpop groups. The group won a number of victories at various music shows. [27] On September 13, the album was reissued under the title “Rainbow”, the title single was titled “Summer Rain”. [28] .
2018: Time for the Moon Night , Sunny Summer , Memoria, and Japanese Debut
GFriend began the year with their first solo concert, Season of GFriend, which took place on January 6 and 7, 2018. GFriend has signed with [29] King Records . [30] [31]
Their sixth mini-album, Time for the Moon Night , set a new record for the group, taking first place in 10 countries on iTunes . He debuted at # 1 on the top Download, Album & Social chart on Korea’s top Gaon chart, [32] [33] [34] [35] and sold over 84,000 copies in South Korea. The following week, it was reported that the group was linked to Girls Generation and Twice as a girl group with most of the top 10 entries on the Billboard World Albums Chart , with 5 entries each. [36] In the second week of promoting the album, GFriend won six awards in South Korean music programs, making Time for the Moon Night the first song of 2018 to win all the prizes on music programs. At the end of May, the group went to Japan to promote their GFriend 1st Best album, which was released on May 23. [39] [40] He finished 10th on the Oricon weekly album chart.
On July 19, GFriend released the summer mini-album Sunny Summer . [41] GFriend debuted at number 30 on the Billboard Social 50 chart, one week after the album was released. [42]
On October 10, GFriend released their first Japanese single, Memoria / 夜 (Time for the moon night). The single debuted at number 6 on Oricon . And on the 5th line in Billboard Japan . [43] [44]
2019: Time for Us, Japanese Singles, Fever Season and Fallin 'Light
On January 14, GFriend released their second studio album, Time for Us, with the title track “Sunrise”. [45] [46] Time for Us was the band's best-selling Korean album with over 86,000 copies sold based on Gaon Chart . [47] On February 13, GFriend released their second Japanese single, “Sunrise (JP ver.) / La Pam Pam”. On March 13th, GFriend released their third Japanese single, "Flower / Beautiful." [48]
On July 1, GFriend released their seventh mini-album, Fever Season , with the title track “Fever”. The mini-album consists of eight tracks, including an instrumental version of the title track. [49]
