Subsequently, the operetta was subjected to various kinds of alterations, most often on the modern stage is the 1932 version, edited by the composer Ernst Stefan [2] . This version includes the romance “ Dunkelrote Rosen ” (in the Russian translation: “ I threw a bouquet of red roses at the window ”), taken from Milloecker's operetta “Vice Admiral”

The operetta was staged on the stages of many Russian musical theaters, the classic Russian translation of the libretto was performed by Mark Yaron and Vladimir Polyakov. It was repeatedly filmed, including one television movie was shot in the USSR.

Story

The operetta takes place around 1820 on the island of Sicily , in a small coastal town. Local mayor Baboleno Nazoni hopes to get rid of his debts by marrying his son Sindulfo to the rich beauty, the Dowager Countess Carlotta; the mayor found out that the countess became the heiress of a huge castle and a million guild, but she still does not know about it. The mayor promises the countess his support in receiving the inheritance, provided that she marries Sindulfo; Carlotta, in need of money, reluctantly gives her consent.

Meanwhile, innkeeper Benozzo is spreading rumors that a brutal robber named Gasparone is rampant nearby. Benozzo's goal is to divert police attention from his own smuggling activities. At the same time, Count Erminio Saluzzo, an amateur geologist, came to the town, he was going to explore the Etna volcano. Met Carlotta, he falls in love with her. With the help of friendly smugglers, Erminio stage the attack of the robbers on Carlotta, after which he “frees” her. Carlotta is amazed at the nobility of Gasparone.

The action is transferred to the countess’s castle, which just received the inherited million. The mayor is waiting for Sindulfo to appear, but they bring him a message that the impudent Gasparone has kidnapped his son and is demanding a ransom of ten thousand guilds. The compassionate Carlotta hands the mayor the required amount, but Gasparone demands an increase in the amount of the ransom to a million. Carlotta agrees.

The mayor grossly refuses to marry his son to Carlotta - he does not need a poor daughter-in-law. Count Erminio visits the countess and discards the mask. He only wanted to protect the countess from an unwanted marriage. The innkeeper Benozzo appears and reports that Gasparone has decided to leave Sicily. After that, Benozzo gives Carlotta a farewell gift from Gasparone, in which there is a stolen million. The countess is now free and the happiness of lovers does not interfere.
